19.03.2026

A seminar on strategic environmental assessment was held in Astana on March 18-19, 2026. The training seminar was held on the topic: "The practice of applying strategic environmental assessment in the Republic of Kazakhstan".

The event was organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in conjunction with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with the support of the RSE on the right of economic management "Information and Analytical Center for Environmental Protection" (IACEP).

The seminar was attended by representatives of central and local government bodies, as well as specialists involved in state and territorial planning processes. This event brought together experts and practitioners to discuss current issues related to the implementation and development of strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in Kazakhstan.

The seminar program included a detailed examination of key aspects of SEA application, including national legislative requirements, institutional mechanisms, and international best practices. Participants were provided with up-to-date information on the role of SEA as an important tool for ensuring environmental sustainability in the development of strategic and policy documents.

Particular attention was paid to the practical experience of implementing strategic environmental assessment in the Republic of Kazakhstan. During the discussions, participants examined existing approaches, problematic issues, and ways to improve SEA procedures, taking into account international standards and national specifics.

The practical portion of the seminar included interactive sessions aimed at reinforcing theoretical knowledge. Participants practiced the key stages of strategic environmental assessment, from screening and scoping to preparing reporting documentation and incorporating environmental factors into decision-making. The workshop also addressed common mistakes and challenges encountered during SEA implementation.

The seminar focused on improving the effectiveness of interagency cooperation and integrating environmental considerations into planning processes at the early stages of document development. This is particularly important for ensuring a balance between economic development and environmental protection.

Such events help strengthen the professional competencies of specialists, develop expert potential, and foster a unified approach to the application of strategic environmental assessment in Kazakhstan. Furthermore, the seminar has become an effective platform for exchanging experiences and developing practical solutions aimed at improving the country's environmental policy.

The Information and Analytical Center for Environmental Protection, a state-owned enterprise with the Right of Economic Management, will continue to provide methodological and informational support in the field of environmental legislation, as well as promote the development of modern environmental regulation tools and sustainable development in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
