World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
03.07.2026
The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed annually on June 17. This international day was established by the United Nations in 1994 after the adoption of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Its main goal is to draw the world's attention to the problems of land degradation, desertification, and drought, as well as to find effective ways to preserve and restore natural resources. This date reminds people that fertile lands are the foundation of life on the planet, as they provide humanity with food, water, and necessary natural resources.
Desertification is the process of land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry areas, where the soil gradually loses its fertility and ability to support vegetation. Despite its name, this process does not mean the literal transformation of a territory into a desert. It can occur on agricultural lands, pastures, and steppe territories, leading to a deterioration of the environmental situation and a decrease in the quality of life of the population. The main causes of desertification are climate change, prolonged droughts, deforestation, overgrazing, irrational use of land and water resources, and soil erosion.
Drought is one of the most dangerous natural phenomena, having a significant impact on human life and the environment. It occurs due to a prolonged lack of precipitation, leading to a reduction in water reserves in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The consequences of drought can be extremely severe: crop yields decrease, pasture conditions deteriorate, there is a shortage of drinking water, and the risk of forest and steppe fires increases. Additionally, drought can cause economic difficulties, rising food prices, and even forced migration of the population from the most affected regions.
The problems of desertification and drought are global in nature and affect billions of people around the world. According to international organizations, a significant part of the land surface is already undergoing degradation, which poses a serious threat to food security, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable human development. Of particular concern is the fact that climate change contributes to an increase in the frequency and duration of droughts, as well as accelerates land degradation processes. In this regard, the United Nations calls on states to take measures to restore soils, conserve water resources, and introduce modern environmentally safe agricultural practices.
For Kazakhstan, the problem of desertification is particularly relevant, as a large part of the country's territory is located in arid and semi-arid natural zones. Important tasks include preserving soil fertility, rational use of pastures, and protecting water resources. One of the most well-known examples of an environmental problem in the region is the drying up of the Aral Sea, which has led to significant changes in the natural environment and a deterioration in the living conditions of the population in the surrounding territories.
The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is marked by the holding of international conferences, scientific forums, environmental actions, educational events, tree planting, and information campaigns. These events are aimed at increasing the environmental awareness of the population and drawing attention to the need for careful attitude towards land and water. Every person can contribute to solving this problem by using water economically, participating in landscaping, and supporting environmental initiatives.
Thus, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought has great international significance. It reminds humanity of the need to preserve land and water resources, prevent environmental degradation, and ensure sustainable development for future generations. Rational use of nature, land restoration, and joint efforts by states are the most important conditions for maintaining ecological balance, environmental security, and human well-being around the world.
